When:  Tuesday, November 15, 2016-afternoon (12:30-2:30) and
                                                   evening (5:30-7:30)
   Wednesday, November 16, 2016-afternoon(12:30-2:30)

How do conferences work?  
Teachers will meet individually with parents in ten minute blocks.

Upcoming Events!!!!!




1. Town Meeting Awards Ceremony Reminder

If you received an invitation because your child is receiving an award, it is this Friday November, 4 at 8:10 a.m.

2. Eli Whitney Testing/Application Deadline

Completed Applications will be sent out this week.  Grades closed yesterday and a completed 1st marking period report card is required to be sent with the application.  The deadline for applications is December 19, 2016.

If you are planning on applying to either Eli Whitney or Platt tech, an admissions test is required.  Dates and Times are available on the JMMS website, Eli or Platt website or in my blog posts.   You can take the test at any Connecticut Technical High School.   The admissions test in a math and language arts assessment.  Scores from that are used in conjunction with grades to get an bigger picture of a students academic abilities.

3.  Lyman Hall Presentation

The Lyman Hall Presentation will be this Friday November 4 at 12:45.  Sign Ups are in Guidance.
 Lyman Hall Applications are Due by January 13, 2017

A reminder for students applying to Eli Whitney from the Director of Admissions




Just a reminder that the Open House at Eli Whitney Tech HS is WEDNESDAY, November 2nd from 5:30pm to 7:30pm.


Also, a bit of information about the admissions test:
·         Students must register On Line (https://whitney.cttech.org/admissions) at least 5 days in advance.
·         They can test at ANY location in the technical high school system
·         The test can only be taken ONCE
·         If a student receives accommodations, I must receive documentation to support that PRIOR to the test date so I can arrange this
·         The student CAN test PRIOR to submitting the application.
·         Applications with no test score will remain INCOMPLETE until the test is taken.

All applicants for admission to a Technical High School MUST take an assessment to determine  literacy and numeracy skills.  Registration for the tests are done ONLINE ONLY. Registration can be via any tech school website.  Click the “Admissions” tab.  Register early, as some locations and times will fill up quickly.

*Your application will not be complete until you have taken this assessment!!*



You may take the test at any school site.  You do not have to take the test at the school where you have applied.  The following is a list of test dates at Platt Tech (Milford) and Eli Whitney (Hamden).

Notice from the Superintendent regarding an outreach campaign through the CT State Dept of Education





The CT State Department of Education is conducting an outreach campaign to gather constituent perspectives and data which involves a focus group with students and parents concerning the 2016 Every Student Succeeds Act.

The students and parents focus group will be held at ACES, 205 Skiff Street, Hamden, on 11/1/2016 from 5-7:00 p.m.

Additional Lyman Hall informartion



If you are applying to Lyman Hall, please read!!!!


 A new part of the application process is that 5% of the application score is based on an in-person discussion/ conversation.  There are multiple ways for students to get credit for this.  One is that they sign a sheet that says they attended the presentation (they can also come to our Open House in December or schedule an individual tour/ appointment).


Attending the presentation on November 3rd here at JMMS can count as that presentation!!

Lyman Hall Presentation for 8th graders



An admissions representative from Lyman Hall Vocational Agricultural High School in Wallingford will be here at JMMS. They will do a presentation for students on Thursday November 3rd at 12:45.

Sign ups will be in Guidance and will start next Monday.   Sign ups will also be announced during the morning announcements.  Only students who sign up will be allowed to participate.

Platt Tech/Eli Whitney Application Deadline!



The due date for Application to be received at Platt Tech and Eli Whitney High school is December 19, 2016.

An application's last stop is to me in Guidance.  I will fill out the counselor section, make a copy and send the original into Platt or Eli Whitney.

Math and English assessments must also be taken this year before the admissions deadline.  This is a new admissions process this year.  The math and English assessments will also be used along with grades when looking at academics.

You must register for the tests online at either the Platt or Eli Websites.  Students can take the test at any tech school, even if its not the one they are applying for.

Classroom Lessons this week!!!


I will be visiting the 8th grade Social Studies classes this week to do a High School Informational Presentation.   It will be similar to the powerpoint presented at Open House.  I will be adding a few interactive components as well.   They will receive a general overview of high school requirements, high school options, open house dates and application deadlines.  I will also have copies of applications available as well.

Eli Whitney Presentation Sign Ups Are Now Available!



The presentation will be on Friday, October 7th at 12:45.


Please sign up in Guidance by Wednesday October 5th.  No students will be allowed to sign up the day of the presentation.  The sign ups will also be announced daily this week during morning announcements.

Open House at JMMS will be held next Wednesday, September 14th, at 6:00.  8th grade parents who are interested in attending a High School Application informational session, it will be held in the auditorium at 5:30 p.m.

Parents will be able to follow their child's schedule and meet all of their teachers.  Teachers will review their class expectations, upcoming topics and events, and answer any questions.

Supplies for 2016-2017 8th Grade School Year

A list of supplies needed for 8th grade classes is currently being compiled.  It will be put on the school website as well as on my blog.

Its a little early to be talking about next school year but as I saw last summer, they start pushing back to school at stores in July.

The BEST store I found for back to school deals is Walgreens.  With the coupons they have in the inserts, I stock up for the year for under 8 bucks.   Start looking at the ads in July for the sales.  My tip is to get the supplies as soon as the ads start coming out. The closer to school, the less stock the stores will have.

Here is an example of last summers back to school ad for Walgreens. Its a little blurry.  If you notice the coupons on the right side, they have rulers, highlighters and folders 7 for $1.  Loose leaf paper, one subject notebooks, and packs of pencils and erasers are 49 cents each.
